Professor Cava maintains an active architectural practice in Portland where he has carried out a range of projects of different types and at different scales, and has won several design awards. One of his main interests is in the role of building construction and tectonics in the aesthetic content of architect. He collaborated with Professor Kenneth Frampton of Columbia University in the recent book Studies in Tectonic Culture (MIT Press, 1995).
Professor Cava teaches seminars in contemporary architecture, history of the tectonic idea, analysis of architectural form, as well as design studios at the intermediate and advanced levels, in both Eugene and Portland. He is coordinator of an annual summer studio in Portland, in which different well-known practitioners participate each year.
