Professor Michael Fifield, AIA, AICP, was the Head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Oregon from 1998 to 2003. Professor Fifield brings to his position many years of teaching and administrative experience. In addition to his work as past Director of the Joint Urban Design program at Arizona State University, he also served as Head of the Department of Architecture at Penn State University until 1998. Professor Fifield, a registered architect in Arizona, Idaho, and Oregon is recognized nationally for his work in housing and neighborhood development. He is the recipient of numerous awards, has an impressive record of research and has been in professional practice in Arizona, Seattle and Los Angeles.

Professor Fifield has taught architecture since 1982, initially at the University of Idaho, then at Arizona StateUniversity, Penn State University and currently at Oregon. He has taught courses in environmental analysis and housing environments and studios at many levels in both undergraduate and graduate programs. His research, creative activity and professional work have focused on housing, community design and urban design, with significant funded work in applied community planning and urban design projects. His project, Metropolitan Canals: A Regional Design Framework, received a Progressive Architecture research award and was published in PA in July 1995. He also received an Honorable Mention for his submission to the New American House competition.
