"My major interest in architecture and urbanism is in the development of meaning. I am also interested in sustainable urban design dependent on transformation of traditional or local forms to retain cultural identity and meaning while improving the city. Here the making of architecture and urban places becomes part of a culturally based dialogue engaging the issues of a particular context.
The majority of my research and creative work is carried out in relation to my professional activity. My architectural practice is varied but emphasizes urban issues. Even our smaller projects are developed from the perspective of the critical examination and improvement of the immediate context and the city."
Professor Genasci is presently designing pedestrian oriented villages and parts of cities which have a higher housing density than usual, that provide for public places in close proximity to dwellings, and that maintain a balance between the automobile and pedestrians. He has worked extensively with neighborhood groups in Oregon to develop consensus on neighborhood design projects, and has worked with students to help develop master plans for Portland neighborhoods.
In addition to design studios, Professor Genasci teaches courses in the theory and history of urban design, Renaissance architecture/urbanism, and modern architecture/urbanism.
