"My published research has been mostly in the area of historic domestic architecture. Late nineteenth century houses of Portland, Oregon have been an area of focus, especially the work of the San Francisco architect Henry Cleveland. More recent studies have engaged houses of the Colonial Revival Period up to 1925 in various parts of the country. My research and that of my students in the areas of paint finishes and wallpapers has revealed important information on the nature of interior surfaces of historic buildings and can be directly applied to preservation and restoration work."
"The history of interior architecture is of great interest to meÿýan area which I like to explore broadly with students through a sequence of courses entitled the History of Interior Architecture I, II, and III, and more specifically through special studies offerings. I have done research in color theory and in memory for color, and I offered for many years a course in color theory and application for the built environment."
