"I am interested in the revitalization of urban areas and the visualization of a range of issues at several scales within a proactive approach to urban design. The focus of my creative work takes place within a public process of education, and often debate, concerning the development of underutilized and vacant lands within cities. These areas, including industrial/railroad properties, highway corridors and waterfronts, offer a unique laboratory to examine new strategies and alternatives to rebuilding cities and to influence the future."
"My design studio teaching often works with Portland's Light Rail Outreach Program, which advocates the extension of the system as one strategy to alleviate urban sprawl. This ongoing research explores alternative urban designs to densify station areas and explore an urban architecture appropriate to a specific study context. Professor Pettinari also carries out his research as a Senior Research Fellow within the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Minnesota. This presently includes work on the Hiawatha Light Rail Corridor of Minneapolis and the Great Northern Rail Corridor in St Paul."
Professor Pettinari's professional office is carried out through a small practice in Seattle, Kasprisin/Pettinari Design, which undertakes consulting and design work in many communities. This work has been recognized internationally, and is featured in the textbook "Visual Thinking for Architectus and Designers, Visualizing Context in Design", Kasprisin/Pettinari, Wiley and Sons.
