"An ongoing interest of mine is the teaching of design, and how it interfaces with my professional work. I'm specifically concerned with the externalization and communication of design process; and with developing methods of communication that clearly describe design intent and construction drawings which "lay" clients can understand."
Professor Utsey has been involved with many residential and landscape projects in Oregon, involving new construction, remodelings and renovations. Her research interests include landscape, settlement patterns and the relationships between landscape and buildings.
Professor Utsey teaches courses in architectural media, architectural contexts, and a seminar on intentional communities. She teaches design at introductory and intermediate levels, where topics often include the landscape and small towns of Oregon. She has also been responsible for coordination of the first-year undergraduate design studios.
