"I am interested in the interior environment in terms of the interaction between people and the built environment, particularly in how designers can make places to support the way(s) that people in offices and schools interact. I have a special interest in the influence of the modernist philosophies on interior spaces, and I am fascinated by design of furniture and products for interiors."

Professor Zimmer has worked extensively in design of the office workplace and has been involved in the design of innovative furniture systems. Her research includes post occupancy evaluation of prototypical environments for group work in conjunction with Steelcase; and studies of flexible interiors (such as open schools) in use. She continues to design interiors and furniture.

Professor Zimmer has taught design studios at all levels and currently teaches the comprehensive project studios in interior architecture. She also teaches courses in furniture design theory and finish materials in interior design.
